He realizes that he put his red tinted glasses back on. He doesn’t remember doing this, but it makes sense. It’s hard to break the knee jerk reaction to just dissociate. However, he took them off before. He saw the kaleidoscope of other colors that life has to offer, and it’s hard to unsee something so promising. There’s a part of him saying that the life he once lived is over. That he can never go back.
So, he takes off the glasses.
“NOW YOU DON’T” by Nico Giovanni. Available everywhere on September 25th.
“NOW YOU DON’T” is the turning point in my concept album where the narrator changes from my younger self (Coin) to my current self (Nico). This song touches on themes of grief, growing up, and wanting to start over. The song occurs after Coin makes a discovery about who he really is. All the forgetting, the dissociating, and the overwhelming feeling of being so out of touch…it all makes sense for once. He is not alone. He is multifaceted. He is made up of so many different parts trying to all figure out how to survive. With this discovery, surely he can grow into a new version of himself, right?
Surely, he can start over? And over. And over. And over.
